I will be spending most of my time in hospital this 2 weeks. Sebab sebelum balik Malaysia UCD want to make sure we have at least experience dealing with REAL patient, which is good. Sebab dalam clinical skill classes we only took history(history taking=interview patient to find out what the hell is wrong) from each other,so bila tanya soalan-soalan pasal penyakit tu jawapan semua ikut skrip. So in less than 8 minutes roughly dah boleh buat differential diagnosis.
Tapi first day pergi hospital i have to interview this really old Irish patient. Nak tau presenting complaint dia pun dah ambik masa 20 menet. Lepastu kalau patient yang tua selalunya cakap tak berapa clear tambah pulak dengan accent segala, salin lirik lagu Eminem lagi senang kot. But then the patient was really helpful and friendly so suruh dia ulang jawapan banyak kali pun takpe hehe.
The hospital is really far from my house, nak balik kena naik bas 11 which is the least frequent bus dalam dunia. Its a big hospital with a new and old building.
-A corridor in the old building
Of course i cant take pictures of the patients, that would be unethical. But yeah basically i have to
whip my hairwalk back and forth between these two buildings. Akibat penjimatan tak bertempat dengan membeli kasut diskaun, komfem at the end of the day kaki akan melecet.
But one thing i realize, working in a hospital is like high school all over again. Your seniors are like Voldemort. The senior surgeon at hepatobiliary ward is Mr McEntee. I can see fear in those interns' eyes everytime they mention his name lol.
Eventhough i was suppose to follow my intern around i decided not to. Sebab they all busy jugak so kalau nak tunggu diorang tak busy and spend time teaching you everything memang tak produktif. Most of the time i'll just go into random wards and ask the nurses there if there's any patient that i can see. Basically hospital visits can be really helpful kalau ada inisiatif sendiri.
And luckily everyone were so helpful. There's this one registrar,Dr Yusof (non malaysian) who has been really nice to me since day 1 because he said he likes my name, lol. Remind me to thank my parents later.
He's the one yang suruh me and my friends interview this Bangladeshi patient who's been suspected with H1N1. Naturally its very important to ask him wether he's been in close contact with anyone else so we have to ask about his sexual activity. Thing is,he doesnt speak good english. Question like 'are you sexually active?' is not clear enough according to Dr Yusof. Thats really hard sebab how are you suppose to ask about people's sexual life without being offensive.
Especially if he's a muslim like this patient. Sebab sometimes diorang suka sentap tak bertempat.
Basically thats what i did this whole week. Owh and i have to bring my own lunch everyday sebab sandwich hambar harga 4 euro lebih. Comel tak weh bawak bekal setiap hari??
